In May 1957, the first of the Piaggio built P.149Ds for the Luftwaffe arrived at the Memmingen Air Force Base and were taken on strength by Flugzeugführerschule "S" (Pilot School).

A stunning aircraft, the majority of FWP-149Ds were operated by the Luftwaffe.

A total of 265 machines were ordered for the Luftwaffe of which 75 were constructed by the parent company, Piaggio.  These were supplied in "knocked-down" form and Focke-Wulf assumed responsibility for the reassembly and pre-delivery test flights.

The remaining 190, (including Wirraway's FWP-149D which was the very last of the 190 to be constructed) were licence-built by Focke-Wulf at its Bremen plant.

Under the designation FWP-149D, Focke-Wulf established licenced production in 1957 while Bavarian-based motor vehicle builder, BMW undertook licenced production of the Avco Lycoming engine.
